However, once the rough-in has been completed, or before installing your plumbing lines, you need to supply the building department with a rough-in plumbing diagram. The drawing doesn’t need to be perfect but should show what size pipes you plan to use and how the plumbing will be laid out and connected. The use of the diagram is to show the plumbing inspector your proposed system will meet all the local code requirements. The building’s plumbing will get inspected as they will check if the pipe sizes meet the code and make sure the drain lines are of high-quality and well supportive for the building. Once your diagram is approved, you are ready to start laying the pipe.

Steps for roughing in your drain line in the commercial building

The rough-in your commercial property’s drain line is the plumbing phase where the basic lines are laid without making the final connections and when the framing is complete, but before hanging the drywall. The drain pipe is usually installed first in the typical plumbing installation. Whereas it is always easier to work smaller pipes around larger ones, than the other way. The drainage system is not pressurized, depending on gravity to function. It means all drain pipes must be angled downward, towards the septic outlet at a standard drop of at least ¼ inches per horizontal foot of pipe. The wastewater system must be vented, to permit wastewater to flow smoothly and allow for the escape of methane gas. For this, the plumbing system should have a pipe that extends upward, through the roof, and vents outdoors. Likewise, each plumbing fixture is required to have its trap or a U-shaped pipe that will remain filled with water to prevent sewer gas from entering the living space.

The following steps will provide you a quick and easy way to rough-in your commercial building’s drain line. 

  • First Step: Mark Key Locations

Identify where all the toilets will be in the building and mark its center on the wall and the floor at that point for the toilet flange. 

While in the kitchen, determine the height of the floor sink above the floor. Some want floor sinks flush with the floor while others want them as much as four inches above the floor and mark its center on the wall and floor at the point for drain flange.

  • Second Step: Cut the Drain Hole

Cut out the marked portion and posture the flange in the hole with the two elongated slots to the sides. Screw the flange to the floor.

  • Third Step: Drain Pipe Installation for toilet

While doing installation work, it is a must to install drain-pipe trap and vent assemblies beneath the floor. Be informed that during roughing-in work that only subfloors are installed, so there are no problems placing drains under the floor. Posture the drain towards the main waste-water pipe, aka the waste stack, with a 3-inch long, 90-degree turn fitting, running it into a 3-inch by 3-inch by 2-inch Y-shaped fitting. Set the Y fitting so the 2-inch opening can be connected to the main vent pipe.

The kitchen drains need to be deep enough for piping grease waste sloped at a 1/4″ per foot slope to keep the velocity up in the grease waste pipes. 

Once you have prepared your plumbing roughed in, it is time to call the building inspector. After they do a thorough inspection you should receive approval to begin the finishing steps to complete your plumbing installation.
