Commercial Sump Pump Replacement – Ajax, Keenleyside Lane

Everest Drain and Plumbing swiftly responded to an emergency drain backup at a sump pump station in Ajax’s Keenlyside Lane community. The station housed four commercial-grade sump pumps within a 20-ft deep circular chamber.

Upon inspection, we found that all sump pumps had suffered mechanical failure due to severe clogs in the discharge line. The continuous clogging led to repeated pump malfunctions, requiring immediate intervention.

How Everest Drain and Plumbing Responded:

Phase 1: Repairing the Underground Discharge Line

Before restoring the sump pumps, we prioritized repairing the broken discharge line to ensure proper water flow. The following steps were taken:

Excavation & Hydrovac: Dug a 16-ft deep and 14-ft wide chamber in the forced ejector area.
Contaminated Soil Removal: Safely disposed of compromised topsoil.
Pipe Exposure: Located and exposed the burst 1-1/4” ABS pipe.
Water Pumping: Removed water from the excavated hole to enable repairs.
Pipe Replacement: Supplied and installed 30 ft of 1-1/4” polyethylene pipe (100 PSI-rated) with stainless steel fittings, connecting it to a 3” discharge shut-off valve.
Structural Support: Secured the new piping system with ¼” crushed gravel and solid concrete blocks.
Backfilling: Restored the excavation site with ¼” crushed gravel and topsoil.

Phase 2: Sump Pump Restoration

With the discharge line operational, we proceeded to repair and reinstall the failing sump pumps:

Pump Lifting & Assessment: Used a hydraulic floor crane to lift each pump (weighing 150 lbs and positioned 20 ft deep). Identified and marked non-functional units.
Cleaning & Repair: Removed each pump, power-washed them, and transported them to a repair facility.
Reinstallation & Testing: Once repaired, we reinstalled and tested each pump to ensure optimal performance.
Temporary Pump Installation: Provided a temporary 1HP grinding pump with proper connections to divert water to a municipal manhole for three days.
Chamber Cleaning: Utilized a 3000 PSI gas-powered water jetter and high-pressure GPM washer gun to break up sludge and fully clean the chamber.
