Problems in Winters, pipe bursts: Ways to prevent them? 2022

Cold temperatures during winters in Toronto can cause pipes to freeze. Water pipes burst because the water inside the pipes expands as if it gets close to freezing, and this causes an increase in pressure inside the pipe. When the pressure gets too high for the pipe to contain, it bursts. The cooling and expanding of the water inside the pipes causes it to rupture during the winter. Burst pipes are the result of this phenomenon.

Frozen pipes are a problem by themselves because they prevent water flow, but even worse, frozen pipes can eventually burst, causing damage and potential flooding. The good news is, there are five easy steps you can take to help prevent this problem from occurring when the temperatures drop.

#1 Keep the Heat On

Make sure that the heat is kept on your property. Heat can help prevent pipes from freezing, and if pipes freeze and burst, it can cause a lot of water damage to the property and to your possessions.

The heat does not have to be kept as high as you normally would keep it if you were actually on the property, but keeping it set above 50 degrees Fahrenheit is a good idea. It will provide enough heat to keep the pipes warm and to prevent water from freezing. So make sure that you must try to maintain the temperature around your water pipes to make it flow easily.

#2 Keep Interior Doors Open

Often pipes are located in cabinets. When the outside temperatures drop, it is a good idea to keep these doors open so that the heat from the rest of the house can keep the pipes warm. You should also keep all interior doors open so that the heat can flow throughout your home to prevent pipes from bursting and can protect your property by stopping bursting of pipes.

#3 Seal Up Cracks and Holes

You should seal any type of holes or cracks that exist near pipes. To prevent burst pipes,  you should do this on both interior and exterior walls of the pipes. Strong and long term water tapes can also be used to avoid cracking of pipes and it  will help to keep the cold air out and the warm air in.

#4 Apply Heating Tape

The electrical heating tape may be an option to keep your pipes from freezing. You can apply this tape directly to your pipe. One type of heating tape turns on and off by itself when it senses heat is needed. The other type of heating tape needs to be plugged in when heat is needed and unplugged when not. Applying heating tapes will prevent burst pipes.

#5 Add Extra Insulation

Pipes that are located in areas that do not have proper insulation, such as basements or attics, and they are in danger of burst pipes, may need extra insulation to keep from freezing. Fit pipes with foam rubber or fiberglass sleeves help decrease the chances of freezing. It is an easy solution for pipes that are exposed but can get expensive if walls, floors or ceilings have to be opened in order to properly insulate the pipe.

Signs that your pipes are frozen:

  • If you turn the water on and barely any comes out, your pipes are frozen.
  • Check exposed pipes for frost; if they are frosty, they could be frozen.
  • Check the cracks and holes; if there are any such holes, they could freeze soon.

What to do if your pipes are frozen?

If any frozen pipes have burst, call a plumber to avoid a flood. If they are frozen but not broken, take these steps to thaw them.

  • Turn the water off at the main shutoff valve.
  • Turn on a faucet so that water can flow through the pipe when the ice begins melting.
  • Heat the frozen section of pipe with a space heater, hairdryer, or an electric heating pad.
  • Apply heat until the water pressure returns.

At what temperature do pipes freeze?

Bitterly cold temperatures: If you have pipes on the outside exposed to the elements, they have the potential to freeze when the temperature drops below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. The lower the temperature and the longer it lasts, the more likely they are to freeze.

Conclusion:

Finally, we came to know that as long as we follow the  preventive measures such as Keep the Heat On, Keep Interior Doors Open, Seal Up Cracks and Holes,  Apply Heating Tape and  Add Extra Insulation we can thaw pipes from freezing and bursting and even though if you are having and any problems regarding freezing and bursting and you can’t handle anymore, then you need to call plumber to solve your problem.
