What is Septic tank and how does it work ?

A septic tank is essentially an underground disposition system employed in wastewater treatment, adopted when centralized sewer systems are not available. It also serves to treat household wastewater coming from toilets, sinks, showers, and so on for appropriate disposal on-site.

The septic tank is designed to receive wastewater from a house and to separate the waste into three layers: the solids that settle at the bottom (sludge), oils and grease that float to the top, known as scum, and liquid effluent in the middle. The solids are decomposed by bacteria inside the tank, whereas the liquid effluent is filtered and flows out into the drain field. The effluent is further treated in the soil of the drain field, where it safely absorbs into the ground. This system should work efficiently, never giving rise to potential problems, such as backups or system failure, with periodic servicing by removal of sludge.
