Radiator leak

The most annoying event is when you come back home and you find your radiator is leaking water. Have you ever faced that? Literally it is the most irritating. Wet patch below your radiator gives you solid proof of radiator leaking. In this situation, it is necessary to take quick action to stop the damage permanently to save your flooring and electronics. Fortunately, we are here with some tips or advice to fix a leaking radiator which will help you to enjoy your warm and happy home in no time. Firstly, the individual should know what a radiator is, and where it is used and  how to find out where it is leaking from.

radiator leak

What is a Radiator and where is it used?

Radiators are the heat ex-changers that are used to transmit thermal energy from one medium to another for cooling and heating purposes. The vast majority of radiators are designed to work in automobiles, buildings, and electronics.

The radiators in the houses are meant to heat the air in the room by transferring heat from the radiators to the surrounding air through convention. They accomplish this by drawing cool air in from the bottom, warming it as it travels over the radiator fins, and then releasing the hot air from the top.

How Do You Figure Out Where The Leak Is Coming From?

Because radiator leaks can come from a variety of sources, you’ll need to figure out where the leak is coming from. This can be accomplished by completely drying your radiator and then using toilet paper to cover the radiator fixtures. The radiator leak is caused by whatever part of the radiator drenches to toilet paper.

Leak from Radiator body

You might be wondering how to fix a leaky radiator in these circumstances if the radiator is leaking from the body. Because this type of leak is caused by rust, you’ll have to replace the radiator body entirely.

There is however, a temporary workaround that you can use to tide you over until you obtain your dream radiator. You can use a plastic resin sealer to stop the water from flowing if you have a feed and expansion tank. However, if you have a sealed central heating system, you won’t be able to do this.

Leaking Radiator Valve

If you discover that you have a leaking radiator valve, it is usually a simple problem to resolve. Damage to the internal spindle packing is the most common cause of radiator valve difficulties. This leak happens only when the valve is partially open and disappears once the valve is closed. How, on the other hand, do you fix a leaking radiator valve? Simply follow these simple methods to fix the radiator leak on your own. If you’re not good with a toolbox, then you can hire a plumber which will  help you with this simple problem that couldn’t be too costly.

The simple steps to fix a Leaking Radiator valve:

  • Drain the leaky valve beneath the source of the leak.
  • Turn off the water supply and close the shield valve.
  • Grasp the water that has escaped.
  • Remove the nut that holds the union together.
  • To release water, open the bleed valve.
  • Wrap PTFE tape around the valve tip.
  • Close the bleed and lock-shield valves and tighten the union nut.
  • Allow your radiator to refill.
  • Check for leaks and close the bleed valve.

Leaking From The Radiator Spindle

You can start counting your lucky stars if you’ve determined that the leak is coming from the spindle rather than the valve itself. This is a straightforward thing to fix, just like the valve. To fix a leaking radiator valve spindle, just tighten the gland nut with your spanner. If this doesn’t work, loosen the gland nut, put some PTFE tape around the spindle, then tighten it back up. If your radiator is still leaking, you may need to reconsider why it is leaking and follow our instructions to determine the source of the leak.

Most likely, you’ve mixed up a spindle leak with a radiator valve leak, but we’ve already taught you how to distinguish the two.

Leaking From The Radiator Gland

Have you tried our recommendations for fixing a leaking radiator valve but the problem persists? It’s more likely that your radiator is leaking from the gland rather than the valve. The radiator gland is a small component hidden beneath the valve’s plastic cap.

Here, are some of the way to fix a leaky radiator gland easily by using PTFE tape:

  • Turn on the valve and check for any leaks from beneath the plastic cap. Turn off the lock-shield valve as well, if it does.
  • Carefully unscrew the gland nut, after removing the plastic cap.
  • Wrap the spindle valve around by using a 20 cm long piece of PTFE tape.
  • To press the tape into the valve’s body, use a flat-headed screwdriver.
  • Replace the plastic cap and turn the valve back on after tightening the gland nut.

Leaking From The Radiator Pipe Joint

You’ll have a series of couplings connecting the pipes to your radiator if you use a compression heating system. Leaks can occur when these joints become loose. Simply  tighten the joints with your spanner to mend a leaking pipe joint. Follow these instructions if your radiator is still leaking water after being repaired:

  • Drain your radiator to the level of the leak’s source.
  • Take a spanner to remove the nut from the leaking radiator pipe.
  • Use PTFE tape and wrap it where the face of the olive meets the joints.
  • By using your spanner, re-tighten the nut.

How Does a Radiator Heater Work?

Radiators work by absorbing heat from water or steam and using it to warm the air around them. They may be used to successfully heat a room in this manner.

They’re designed out of metal since it’s a great heat conductor. The external fins of the radiator naturally heat up as hot water or steam passes through it. As the fins warm up, the air around them warms up as well.

How To Clean Radiators?

In order to get the most out of your radiators, they must be kept clean throughout your home. Because heat is transferred from water or steam in a radiator to the air outside, it is critical that the heat transmission is unhindered. Any dirt or dust that collects on a radiator’s fins or plate acts as an insulator, preventing heat transfer from the radiator to the air outside.

To keep dirt and debris from building on your radiators, simply wipe them clean once a week. When removing more challenging contaminants, they can usually be cleaned with ordinary water or a mild soap solution. Radiators that are clean are considerably more efficient than those that are dirty, and spending the time to clean them will save you money in the long run.

Are you in need of a new radiator or radiator valves?

Unluckily, from time to time you’ll see that you need to fully replace your radiator, or the valve. This might be the reason whether your radiator leak is coming from the body or the valve is damaged. If you need to replace a damaged radiator or radiator valve, you’ll need to decide which product is best for you ahead of time. Be sure the new valve you buy is the same as your old one.

When it comes to replacing a leaking radiator, keep in mind that bigger isn’t always better. You can even half your present rod size for the same amount of heat production with contemporary radiators. Not only will this save money on replacing a radiator, but sleek designs like these will also make your home look more modern.

Some Preventive And Protective Measures You Need While Replacing Radiators:

So, you’ve got your gleaming new radiator, but you’d rather not deal with the hassle of repairing a leaking radiator ever again. If this is the case, make sure to apply a Rust and Corrosion Inhibitor and clean your radiator water on a regular basis using a Radiator Cleaner! Check for any evidence of malfunction in the hose connections that connect the radiator to other sections of your central heating system. Early detection of potential issues can help you avoid a leaking radiator.

Conclusion:

Regardless of what you do, there are occasions when hiring a professional to fix a leak is the best option. The last thing you want to do is aggravate a minor issue by tinkering with something you shouldn’t be fiddling with. Very disappointed with my experience. I was charged what I felt was an excessive amount just to be told my water tank had failed. No repair was completed, yet the bill was still very high.

When I questioned the charge, I was told I had “already received a deal” because I had previously used Everest Plumbing for a flood. That response was disappointing and didn’t justify the cost.

To make matters worse, during the previous job I had arranged for my property management to shut off the building’s main water supply for the scheduled work, but Everest Plumbing never showed up. It wasted everyone’s time and caused unnecessary inconvenience.

I won’t be using them again.

Big thanks to Mr. Nimesh. He really saved me and my home from almost flooding the basement. Nimesh was quick to snake the blocked drain, and later, with his camera inspection, he found that the blockage was caused by roots. He snaked and cleared out the roots. Everything is now working completely fine, and he showed his work through a camera inspection proving the roots were cleared after the snake. A big thank you to Mr. Nimesh for helping to calm down such a panic moment.

I had a pipe burst a few days before Christmas - tis the season. Out of the companies that I contacted, Everest was the only company that could confirm how soon they'd be able to attend to the issue. They offered an appointment for 9am the following morning and Indra was prompt, if not early.

We were very appreciative with his service, and I would go directly with them for future plumbing issues/needs.

Thank you Indra and Everest for your prompt service and pricing.
