Plumbing Inspection

Planning to buy a house in Toronto? There are a lot of things to consider when buying a new home. One thing that many people don’t consider is plumbing and take it for granted and ignore it until something goes wrong. The fact is that an emergency repair is much more expensive than regular inspection and maintenance to keep your system in perfect working order before it reaches the point of an emergency.

Once you’re already in your house in Toronto, it is recommended to have a plumbing inspection at least once a year, to rule out any problems. An inspection usually consists of a licensed plumber completing an examination of your home plumbing system. Here is a checklist of what this examination should involve.

plumbing inspection

Inspection of a backwater valve

Inspection of the home also includes the check of your backwater valve.

Backwater valves are an essential tool to protect your home from flooding during heavy rainfall and sewage flowing back into your home. If your backwater valve has a problem, it could put your home at serious risk from water damage. Many homeowners aren’t familiar with backwater valves or why they’re necessary; however, these devices can protect your house from sewage water getting back into the house from the city’s water mains. The backwater valve is designed to allow sewage and other wastewater to run out one way into the lateral while prohibiting the reversal of the flow.

During heavy rains, it’s common for storm drains to become overwhelmed. When a sewer line backs up, it can flow in the wrong direction back into your home causing more damage to your house. So, it is always recommended to regularly inspect a backwater valve that guards against this harmful backflow of sewage to ensure your home is safe from uncertain floods and damages.

Backflow inspection

Most homeowners in Toronto don’t give backflow inspection a second thought, know what backflow prevention is, or its importance to their family’s health. Even though the water in the Toronto area is fairly clean, things can happen that can lead to damaged water lines. Backflow of water can cause a serious health risk to you and your family.

Backflow Inspection and Test

The pressure downstream in your plumbing systems sometimes becomes higher than the pressure upstream and pushes the contaminated water back into the clean water causing a backflow. This might happen without a way of knowing about it. That’s why periodic backflow inspections are so important. Throughout the inspection, a licensed plumber will examine the assemble that connects your home to the public water supply and recommend any measures needed to ensure clean water in your home. It is advisable to do this inspection once a year by a licensed plumber.

Hot water tank inspection

Water heaters are an important part of our plumbing system. We usually take them for granted until we find icy water awaiting us in the shower. It’s a reminder that we need to take care of our water heater. Like everything else in the house, a simple visual inspection can tell you a great deal about your water heater. An inspection can identify a problem before it becomes a larger one that would cost you more money. Besides, leaks, rust, and other issues only get worse with time, which means the sooner you act with them, the better.

During the inspection of the water heater, the plumber should check:

  • Inspect the hot water tank, its capacity, age, location, and condition.
  • Inspect the Pressure Valve
  • Flush out the tank to remove built-up gunk and keep it running efficiently.
  • Check the heater vent to ensure it’s working properly.
  • Check all the gas or electrical connections to the unit to ensure they are in good condition and no leaks are present.

If the connectors are overly corroded, you may need to replace the water heater. A professional inspection of your water heater can detect any signs of danger, wear and tear, and help you to determine whether to repair or replace your water heater. And this can save you money on emergency repair costs and your utility bills.

All water supply pipeline inspection

Pipeline inspection is needed for keeping the pipeline in good condition. The pipeline needs regular inspections that include external inspection and internal inspection to ensure that a pipeline is maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order, and good repair.

If the house has the older pipeline systems then typically it must have used galvanized pipes while sewers were constructed of cast iron, Orangeburg, or clay. Over time, many of the water pipes can become corroded, develop leaks, and have other problems. In a sewer line, rust and roots are common problems that cause the pipe to break or burst. So during inspection do not only check for signs of corrosion or damage, such as worn connections or residue but also find out what materials the pipes are made of and their diameters. If it is lead supply lines then it can be harmful to the health of people in the home, so the plumber would recommend replacement.

Drain and sewer inspection

Drain and sewer lines are the most essential part of your home’s plumbing system, giving you the ability to safely remove the wastewater from the home. This consists of human waste, from the toilet, or wastewater from bathing, and kitchen waste from cooking and other related activities. This wastewater washes down through the drains into the sewer line as it leaves your property. Sometimes sewers and drains can both become blocked or damaged. These issues can also cause property damage to your homes such as sewage waste spilling back into the home which can cause an unhealthy, stinky mess as well as the potential for water damage and more. Therefore, your drains and sewer lines need to be inspected periodically for the protection of your property. It is the best way to learn about potential issues that are developing before they become problematic.

Moreover, a visual inspection of your wastewater pipes will reveal if any changes need to be made before it causes any emergency issues or damages. For this, the CCTV video is used when inspecting a drain or sewer line. The plumber will be able to view the potential damages of the pipe from the interior. If any damage is found, it can easily be located so that repair work can be completed quickly.

Water appliances inspection

Much like a plumbing system, the plumber needs to check water appliances. Checking the water appliances should be a part of any plumbing inspection. So that the plumber will be able to tell how bad the issue is and whether it’s easy to fix. The water appliances in your home that needs inspection are:

  1. Refrigerator
The refrigerator is the most needed kitchen appliance, and it’s one of the first appliances you should check.

    • Check if the fridge is cooling properly.
    • Check any rusting on the inside, indicating a moisture problem.
    • Check if the seals and gaskets are in good condition and ensure they seal properly.
  2. Range
No matter if the range in your house is gas or electric, it still needs an inspection.

    • Check if the burners, the oven, and the broiler all heats
    • A gas range might include more complications and safety concerns, so make sure your gas is in good condition.
    • Ensure the oven timer works.
    • Make sure that the oven seals properly.
  3. Dishwasher
The dishwasher is another expensive appliance that should be checked.

    • Check the door if it operates well or not. If not there could be a problem with the door’s spring.
    • Similar to the fridge, you should check for any rust or corrosion.
    • Examine for water leaks under the floor and underneath the sink.
    • Test the wash cycle heating element.
    • Once you are done with dishwashing, check that the unit is free of extra water. If you find water left, the pump is likely malfunctioning.
  4. Washer and Dryer
    • Another major home appliance to inspect is the washer and dryer.
    • Do a test run of both washer and dryer to ensure that they function.
    • With the dryer, you’re most concerned about potential fire hazards. Check if there is an excess of lint in the machine.
    • When it’s running, check that the exhaust fan works properly.

Sump pump inspection

A sump pump can be a great addition to any house, but you should be sure to check it frequently for potential water damage that may have occurred. If there’s extreme flooding, a sump pump may not be able to prevent all the water from flooding your basement, so you must take periodic inspections. It will keep your sump system in better, good working condition and help prevent your basement from suffering serious, long-term, and expensive damage from minor issues that could have been addressed earlier.

Water pressure inspection

Water pressure should be checked. Low water pressure sometimes indicates there can be a build-up in the tap or showerhead. On the other hand, too high, or additional pressure can lead to burst pipes and serious damage. Here are the ways to inspect your water pressure.

  • Turn off all of the fixtures that are connected to the water supply
  • Close all of the shutoff valves
  • Locate the faucet that is closest to the water meter
  • Connect a pressure gauge to this outlet and turn on the water

If no other fixture or appliance is drawing water from the supply, the gauge must give an accurate reading of the water pressure. Low pressure should indicate that there is a leak or an obstruction in the supply lines. If the pressure is too high, this could indicate that there is a problem with the pressure regulator.

Testing water pressure periodically can detect a problem with the pressure regulator before the high pressure can damage any plumbing.

Residential Home Inspection

Buying a home is a big purchase, so nothing should be left while deciding if you have found the right home for your family. With all the factors you’re juggling like price, location, number of rooms, etc. it is always recommended to have an initial plumbing inspection before buying a home. A residential home inspection is a visual, non-invasive inspection of many different parts of the home. A certified home inspector will examine the home from the foundation to the roof, where accessible and safe to do so. This includes electrical wiring, plumbing, drain, and more. After completing the home inspection, the home inspector will provide a detailed report of your plumbing system.

By doing this it makes sure that no hidden problems are lurking as well. It’s always better to tackle underlying problems early before they increase and possibly develop into bigger and much more expensive problems. Therefore it is always recommended to check before buying a house to ensure that your residence in it will be a safe and cost-effective one. Always make sure your investment in buying a new home is worthwhile before committing your resources to the purchase.

Plumbing inspection for insurance

Many residential homeowners schedule an annual plumbing inspection to keep up with preventive maintenance and ensure that the home’s plumbing is in good working order. A full plumbing inspection can help to pinpoint possible plumbing problems that can save money, time, and damage. Periodic inspections are also a great way to keep track of appliances like backwater valves and water heaters.

Besides, it’s natural that when you buy a new home, you purchase insurance as well. Home insurance companies require a home plumbing inspection report outlining the status of the plumbing system. This request includes an inspection of the plumbing system. A permit is required for most plumbing work, and only a licensed plumbing contractor can acquire a permit.  Everest Drain & Plumbing is the leading plumbing inspection service provider in Toronto. We provide everything inspection required for insurance from inspection to all paper and report work. We have well trained and licensed plumbing professionals and provide reasonable and best plumbing inspection service in Toronto and its surroundings.

  • Avoid costly plumbing repairs and maintenance.

Very disappointed with my experience. I was charged what I felt was an excessive amount just to be told my water tank had failed. No repair was completed, yet the bill was still very high.

When I questioned the charge, I was told I had “already received a deal” because I had previously used Everest Plumbing for a flood. That response was disappointing and didn’t justify the cost.

To make matters worse, during the previous job I had arranged for my property management to shut off the building’s main water supply for the scheduled work, but Everest Plumbing never showed up. It wasted everyone’s time and caused unnecessary inconvenience.

I won’t be using them again.

Big thanks to Mr. Nimesh. He really saved me and my home from almost flooding the basement. Nimesh was quick to snake the blocked drain, and later, with his camera inspection, he found that the blockage was caused by roots. He snaked and cleared out the roots. Everything is now working completely fine, and he showed his work through a camera inspection proving the roots were cleared after the snake. A big thank you to Mr. Nimesh for helping to calm down such a panic moment.

I had a pipe burst a few days before Christmas - tis the season. Out of the companies that I contacted, Everest was the only company that could confirm how soon they'd be able to attend to the issue. They offered an appointment for 9am the following morning and Indra was prompt, if not early.

We were very appreciative with his service, and I would go directly with them for future plumbing issues/needs.

Thank you Indra and Everest for your prompt service and pricing.
